Tom Wood met us at the booth for Kollmorgen at Promat 2019 in Chicago for his first interview with IndustrialSage!
Full confession: we gravitated to Kollmorgen at Promat because we saw two life-sized Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots pummeling each other in a gigantic pen! The display was complete with live joysticks, sound effects, and actual gameplay! The robots were entirely created with a twelve-axis system of parts produced by Kollmorgen. On top of that, passersby could scan a QR code with their phones and then see the analytics from the robot sensors changing in real time!
Kollmorgen has been in the field of industrial applications for more than one hundred years. Their robotics division, more specifically, started over two decades ago. Their products cover everything from automation and motion control to surgical robots. The boxing display, for them, is a great live example of their motor, drive, and control solutions.
And if the Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots weren’t any indication, Kollmorgen also knows how to navigate trade show marketing very well. Promat was turning into a huge success for them.
“The show’s been great, right from the ‘opening bell’ on Monday morning, so to speak. We’ve more than met the goals that we initially set in place. We’ve seen a broad range of potential customers, as well as a lot of our existing customers that have come by to see our next-generation ideas.”
Some of the new ideas exhibited by Kollmorgen at Promat include their offerings for ‘Co-bots.’ (Also known as collaborative robots.) Tom and his team came to share specific motor architecture technology that’s optimized specifically for industrial robotics applications.
There are many, many companies trying to develop robotic joints around the world. Kollmorgen’s motors are created to make those joints faster, more powerful, and more effective. And given the boxers they had on display, it’s hard to doubt their capabilities in the slightest.
If ever you hear that Kollmorgen is going to be at a trade show near you…get there! You might get to relive your childhood a little bit.
